Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth colored facings composed of a dental ceramic material that are permanently cemented to your front teeth to dramatically create a beautiful and attractive smile. Veneers are a more conservative, modern alternative to traditional crowns that are usually completed in only two appointments.
Porcelain veneers tend to be more durable and color stable than traditional composite filing material. The procedure typically involves some reduction of your natural tooth structure followed by impressions of the prepared teeth which are then sent to my dental technician to fabricate the final veneers. Being that the veneers are made in the controlled environment of the dental laboratory, versus directly in the mouth, we will have greater control over developing a natural tooth shape with a beautiful, smooth and translucent surface. Often with this technique I will have you visit my dental ceramist for a custom shade appointment so the color and characterization of the porcelain genuinely matches your adjacent natural teeth. This is how celebrities gain that “Hollywood Smile”.
Indications for porcelain veneers:
- Rapidly create a bright, straight, and beautiful smile
- Poorly shaped teeth
- Severely discolored or stained teeth
- Excess spacing between teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Chipped or worn teeth
Porcelain veneers are but only one choice for improving the aesthetics of your smile. All dental materials have certain advantages and disadvantages but no dental material is capable of lasting forever. As your dentist, I will always advise you on the best material choices for any given situation based upon your needs, dental research, and my experience. Of course excellent oral hygiene practices, good dietary habits, and regular dental visits to my practice will aid in the life of any restoration.
