Dentures and Partial Dentures

Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and deficient surrounding gum tissue. I take great care to carefully select the most aesthetic and durable materials to create your dentures and partial dentures. Without this care, dentures can look like “artificial teeth”, however, my goal is to create natural looking teeth designed to enhance your smile.

Dentures, also called complete removable dentures, are necessary when all of the teeth in the upper and/or lower arches are missing. Traditionally, dentures were supported only by the underlying bone and gum tissue. However, in a more modern context I routinely offer dental implants as an additional method to securely anchor the dentures in position. This is called an implant supported denture.

Partial dentures, also called removable partial dentures, are utilized when some natural teeth remain and some areas have missing teeth in the single upper or lower arch. Partial dentures rely on some tooth-born support as well as the underlying bone and gum tissue.

Dentures and partial dentures are very durable removable dental appliances that can last many years, however, due to normal wear and underlying one change they may need to be readjusted, repaired, or even remade.

Indications for dentures:

  • Loss of all teeth in one or both arches
  • Enhancing the smile and providing confidence/self-esteem
  • Provide underlying structural support to “sunken” facial tissues
  • Restore function of chewing, speech, and digestion

Indications for partial dentures:

  • Loss of multiple teeth in one arch
  • Enhancing the smile and providing confidence/self-esteem
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting
  • Restore function of chewing, speech, and digestion
  • Provide underlying structural support to “sunken” facial tissues

Dentures and partial dentures are but one choice for restoring your teeth.  All dental materials have certain advantages and disadvantages but no dental material is capable of lasting forever. As your dentist, I will always advise you on the best material choices for any given situation based upon your needs, dental research, and my experience. Of course excellent oral hygiene practices, good dietary habits, and regular dental visits to my practice will aid in the life of any restoration.
